「伪纪录片」的英文是mockumentary，也就是mock和documentary的结合，它常被归类为一种纪录片或电视节目类型，通常带有喜剧的嬉闹性格，但也有非常严肃的伪纪录片。虽然它和纪录片一样都记录着真实的生活，但实际上却是虚构的，运用讽刺或仿拟的方式来分析社会上的大事件或问题，挑战着人们对于既定事实的认知，以及对于纪录片里的核心命题「真实」的观念。
在伪纪录片里，常常使用历史资料画面或者人物访谈（大头讲话）来讨论过去的事件，要不然就是以真实电影的方式（干涉、介入）去跟拍事件里的当事人。
