「ヴァネスが、５年ぶりのニューアルバムをひっさげて、再び東京に戻ってきた－。この一年、多くの経験を積み、ミュジシャンとしての自信をつけてきたヴァネス。二度目の日本公演を前にして語る、音楽とダンスへの熱い想いー」
(Vanness has come back to Tokyo on the release of his new album after 5 years since the last one. In the past one year, Vanness has built up his confidence as a musician. Before his second Japan concert, he expressed his passion toward music and dance to us.)

Q:コンサートタイトルMy Kingdomにはどんな意味が込められているのでしょうか。また、今回のソロコンサートのコンセプトの見所は？
(What is the meaning of “My Kingdom” which is the title of your album? What is the concept highlight of your upcoming solo concert?)
A:「僕のダンス、僕のエンタテイメントの世界に皆さんを招待したいと思っています。スクリーンなど視覚効果にも凝ってアーティスティックな素晴らしいショーにしたいと考えてます。新しいアルバムを出したいので、今回は自分の歌メインで聴かせます。色々構想もあるし、それを実現させて見応えのある素晴らしいショーにしたいと思います。音楽的にもアレンジを加えるつもりだし、演出的にもすごく劇場的な見応えあるものになるでしょう」
(I want to introduce my dance and my entertainment world to all of you. I want to make it a wonderful and artistic show which is full of exquisite visual effects. I’m going to release the new album and therefore I’ll let the audience listen to my songs mainly. I’ve got many ideas and want to make it a show that is worth watching. I’ll put effort in the music arrangement and there will also be some interesting and worth watching on the stage.)
Q：初めてソロコンサートを開催した東京に、再び戻ってくる気持ちはどうでしょうか。
(How do you feel about having concert again in Tokyo where you held your first concert?)
A:「二回目ということもあって、ステージの状態も把握できているし、安心感はあります。落ち着いてパフォーマンスが出来るかな、と思います」
(Since it’s the second time and I’m familiar with the stage, I think I’ll feel comfortable to perform on it.)
Q：この１年、日本でのイベントライブ参加や、北京やマレーシアでコンサートをしたりしていますが、ミュージシャンとしてどんな経験を積んだと思いますか。
(In the past 1 year, you participated in live concert in Japan and you also had concerts in Beijing and Malaysia. What kind of experience that you have had as a musician?)
A：「すごく成長したと思います。仕事的にも、自分の意見を言えるようになりましたね。アーティストとして、自分の意見をきちんと言い、また言ったことを実行できるというのは、すごく大事だと思うから。それってなかなか難しいことだから、そうできるようになって嬉しいです」
(I think I’ve grown in a great deal. I’ve become more able to express my own opinion on my job. As an artist, it is very important to be able to express one’s opinion, or to implement what one has said. It is not easy to do so and I feel happy of being more able to do that.)
Q：２年前、初めてインタビューをした時は、ヴァネスさんに＜ミュージシャン＞というイメージがありませんでした。でも今はすっかり、＜ミュージシャン＞というイメージができました。
(Two years ago when I first interviewed you, your image of being a musician was not strong, but now it has become very much clear.)
A：「そう、言ってもらえて嬉しいです！やっぱり、アイドルと言われるよりも、ミュージシャン、アーティストとして認めてほしいから。僕には、デビューした時から＜アルバムを出したい＞という気持ちがあったんです。ただその時は、自分がやりたい音楽と、当時、台湾で流行っていた音楽とは合わないような気がしたので、まずはドラマでデビューしようということになって。でもまさか、「流星花園～花より男子」のヒットで、自分がF４の一員としてアイドルになってしまうとは、予想もしなかったんですよ。また、パート１が終わる前からパート２を作ることが決まってて、ヘアスタイルを変えることも出来なくて、ちょっとつらかったですね。でもその後、頑張って、時間は長くかかってしまったけど、ちょっと辛かったですね。でもその後、頑張って、時間は長くかかってしまったけど、やっと自分の好きな音楽を出せるようになりました」
(Yes, thanks a lot for saying that! I want people to recognize me as a musician or an artist, rather than an idol. I wanted to “have my own album” ever since when I debuted. Yet, at that time the kind of music that I wanted to do didn’t match with Taiwan’s main stream then. I therefore decided to debut in drama. I didn’t expect [流星花園～花より男子] to get that popular and I had become a member of F4 as an idol. Also part 2 was under arrangement before part 1 had completed. I couldn’t change my hairstyle because of the drama and it was a little hard for me. Although it took me a little time on drama, eventually I could concentrate to do the music that I like.)
＊ヴァネスが語る一言、一言からは、彼の、ミュージシャンとしてのプライドと自信が伝わってきたアイドルというレッテルをはがし、今、自分が思うままに活動している、そんな喜びが彼の体からあふれ出しているようだ。
(From every word that Vanness spoke, I could feel his pride and confidence as a musician. He took away his label as an idol. His happiness of being able to do what he wants has been flowing out from his body.)

Q：日本での記者会見では、「コンサートで僕のダンスを見せたい！」と言っていましたが、ヴァネスさんにとってダンスは、重要な位置を占めるものなのでしょうね。
(At the press conference in Japan, you said, “ I want to show you my dance in the concert!”. How important is dance to you?)
A：「ええ！子供の頃、初めて見たダンスに＜うわ―すごい！＞って感激して、すっかりダンスの魅力にはまってしまいました。それで、１３歳のときからダンスの勉強を始めたんですよ」
(When I first watch people dance while I was little, I felt it was very impressive and “wow!”. I found dance very fascinating and therefore started learning dance from the age of 13.)
Q：初めて見たというのは、やはりマイケル・ジャクソンですか？
(Was Michael Jackson’s the first dance that you watched?)
A：「マイケル・ジャクソンはもちろんだけど。これはブーガールー・シュリンプ（Boogaloo Shrimp）という人の出ている映画で、彼のダンスを見て感激して、そのとき彼は僕のヒーローになりました。で、９８年に初めて友達とダンスのコンテストに参加したんだけど、その時、彼がそのコンテストの審査員だったんだよ！僕らは３位を取ったんだけど、コンテストが終わってから、彼がその日の審査員だって分かったんだ。で、彼が楽屋まで来てくれて、＜さっきのダンスは素晴らしかったよ！＞と言って、サインもしてくれたんです。自分のアイドルは、ヒーローがそんな風に接してくれて、本当に感激しました！」
(Of course I’ve watched Michael Jackson’s. In the movie in which Boogaloo Shrimp played, I saw his dance and felt it very inspiring and he became my “hero”. I first joined the dancing contest with a friend in 1998, where he was one of the adjudicators! We were the second-runner-up and we knew that he was the adjudicator after the contest. He came to the backstage and said to us, “the dance just now was wonderful!” He also gave us his autograph. I was so grateful of being able to get in touch with my idol/hero in that way.)
Q：「Never Let You Go」のPV（プロモーション・ビデオ）でも、素敵なダンスを見せてくれていますが、自分で監督されたそうですね。
(You show us fantastic dance in PV (promotion video) of “Never Let You Go”. Did you direct that video?)
A；「ええ、その次に「我的王国」も撮りました。そのPVは、もっともっと楽しめると思いますよ。「Never Let You Go」では、演出は参加したのですが、編集は時間がなくて出来なかったんです。それが残念でしたけど、「我的王国」は最後まで自分でやっています。僕の意見がちゃんと反映されていて、かなりいいものが出来たと思います。」
(Yes, after that I took “My Kingdom”. I enjoyed that PV very much. For “Never Let You Go”, although I participated in the rendition, I didn’t have time for the edition. For “My Kingdom”, I could participate in the whole PV production. My comments were properly reflected and I think the result was quite satisfactory.)
Q：映像の演出にも興味があるのですか？
(Do you also have interest in screen playing?)
A：「はい、あります。曲を聴いた瞬間から、自分の中に映像が浮かんでくるんです。ダンスの振り付けも歌詞に合わせて作っているし、PVは、そのダンスにあわせて作っています。「Never Let You Go」の時には、専門の人と一緒に考えながら振り付けをしましたし、「我的王国」はフリースタイルで、自分で考えています」
(Yes. As soon as I hear the melody of a song, there will be an image on my mind. The choreography of dance was arranged according to the lyrics of the song and the PV was also produced to match with the dance. The choreography was arranged with some professional ones in “Never Let You Go” and that in “My Kingdom” was made by me.)
＊ダンスを語りだすと、話が止まらなくなりそうな勢いのヴァネス、その表情はまるで子供のようでダンスへの愛と情熱が、たっぷりと伝わってきた。
(When talking about dance, Vanness was so excited and his expression was like a child who was full of love and passion towards dance.)

Q：2ndアルバムの「V.Dubb」は、１枚目よりも、音楽的にすごく自由な感じがしますね。
(Your second album, “V.Dubb”, seems to be more “free” when compared to the first one.)
A：「そうですね。自分を表現するために、制作期間中にはにはレコード会社の人とけんかもしました。というのは、僕には＜自分がやりたいことはやりたい！＞という想いがあるし、一方、レコード会社のほうにはコマーシャリズムを追求する部分があるでしょ。でも自分にはこだわりがあったし。今回は自分がやりたいことが出来て満足しています」
(Yes. To express myself more, I argued with the record company during production period. There was certain area where “I want to do what I want!”, but the record company has to think about the commercialism. There was something that I wanted to stick to. This time I could do what I wanted and I am satisfied with that.)
Q：MACHI（麻吉）のメンバーや、たくさんの友達が一緒に参加していますね。
(MACHI’s member and many of your friends are participating in it.)
A：「MACHIもそうだし、ダンサーもそうだし、プロデューサーのジェチョン（チョン・ジェユン）さんも、みんな大切な友達です。ジェチョンさんは韓国の方ですが、９２年頃から歌手として活動されていて、その後もプロデューサーや作曲家として活動している人です。韓国にR&Bとヒップホップを持ち込んだ人でもあるし、また台湾のエルバ・シャオやアメイに曲を提供したりしているんですよ。僕は以前から彼の曲をすごくいいなと思っていて、ずっと一緒にやりたかった人なんです」
(MACHI, the dancers and the producer (Jae Chong) are all my good friends. Jae Chong is a Korean, who was active as a singer from 1992, and then he became a producer and composer. He was also the one who introduced R&B and Hip-hops to Korea. He composed songs for the Taiwanese artists, 蕭亜軒& 阿妹. Before I have been thinking that his songs are very nice and have been looking forward to working with him.)
Q：１曲に収録されている「我的王国」は、そごくヴァネスさんらしい曲ですね。
(The first song, “My Kingdom” very much has your style.)
A：「実は、この曲は最初、入れる予定ではなかったんです。アルバムが完成したくらいの時に上がってきた曲で。でも、聴いたらすごく気に入って、＜これあはぜったに入れたい！＞と思いました。もうその時には「Never Let You Go」のPV撮影が始まってたんですけど、会社に＜づでぃても入れたい＞と言って。アメリカでPVを撮影しながら、この曲のレコーディングもして。曲を聴いてすぐに歌詞は友達のルーク・ツイにお願いしました。歌詞が上がったのが日曜で、月曜にレコーディング。ラップ部分は自分が書くから、レコーディングしながらラップを書いて、月曜日中に完成させて、その後すぐにミックスして・・・。本当にぎりぎりでアルバムに入った曲なんです（笑）」
(Actually this song was not in this album at the very beginning. This song was completed when the album had almost done. I liked that song very much and thought “we have to include this song!”. At that time we have started making the PV of “Never Let You Go”, but I told them I very much wanted to include this song. While I was shooting for the PV in the States, I did the recording of that song. After listening to the melody of the song, I asked my friend 崔惟楷 for the lyrics. The lyrics were done on Sunday and I did the recording on Monday. I wrote the rap part and I did that during recording period. We did all the things in Monday and after that we did the mixing for the song. We really rushed to include this song in this album.)
Q：このアルバムで、「ここを一緒に歌ってほしいな」というポイントはありますか？
(Is there any phrases in your album where “you want us to sing together”?)
A：「ええ、ありますよ！「Never Let You Go」だったら, Oh oh oh~ I never let you go~のところ、間に＜V.DUBB>って入るでしょ。あそこ！もう曲を聴いたときから、コンサートではこうしたいなって、考えてました。サビの部分とかね、そんなに難しいメロディじゃないから。「我的王国」も、Oh~ it’s~~V.Dubbのところ。で、ラップの時も僕の名前が出てくる部分を、うージャンハオって、みんなで一緒に叫んでほしい。僕の名前のとこは、みんなで言ってくれるといいな」
(Yes. “Oh oh oh~ I never let you go~” in “Never Let You Go”, and you can hear “V.Dubb” in between. That’s also the phrase that I want the audience sing. I’ve been imagining how to include the concert audience in my songs when I first listened to the melody. The melody is not so difficult. And also “Oh~ it’s~~V.Dubb” in “My Kingdom”. In the rap part, I also want the audience call out my name “Wu Jianhau”.)
Q：歌を作っているときから、ファンたちの顔を思い浮かべていたんですね。
(Did the faces of your fans come up to your mind when you composed the songs?)
A：「うん。最初のアルバムの時には、自分のこだわりもそんなには入れられなかったし、台湾のマーケットに合わせて作ったのでそこまでは考えられなかったけど、今度のアルバムは最初から、皆の顔が見えてましたね」
(Yes. For the first album where I couldn’t put through much of my ideas and it was made according to the commercialism of Taiwan’s market, I didn’t think that much about that then, but for this new album, I saw my fans’ faces from the very beginning.)
＊１ｓｔから５年の歳月をかけてリリースされた２NDアルバム「V.DUBB」には、彼の熱い想いが込められていた。音だけでなく、衣装、ヘアスタイル、ダンスからPV製作まで、全てにかかわったというヴァネス。「自分自身を最大限表現することができた」という彼の言葉通り、この作品には＜ヴァネス・ウー＞という人間の全てが詰まっているのだ。
(It has been 5 years since the release of his first album and in this second album of “V.Dubb”, he has expressed much of his passion. Not only on the songs, also the costumes, hairstyle, dance and the PV production, Vanness has played a part. As what he said, the album “expressed himself to the maximum level” and in this album, it is full of “Vanness Wu”.

Q：今年は、台湾観光局のイメージキャラクターに選ばれ、F4としての仕事も続いてますね。ただファンの意識としては、＜F4のヴァネス＞というより、ヴァネス・ウーという一人のアーティストというように、見る目が変化してきたように感じます。
(You are chosen as the image character for Taiwan Tourism Board this year and you have different activities with F4 members. Yet, to fans, you’ve been transformed from “Vanness of F4” to an artist called Vanness Wu .)
A：「それは嬉しいことだと思います。４人一緒の時は本当に楽しいし、悪いことは全然ないけれど、個人で活動しているときは、僕という人間をよく見てほしいですね。ヴァネス・ウーという人間として認められたいし、自分がやっていきたいこともあるから。」
(I’m happy about that. It is really fun for 4 of us to get together, while when I work individually, I want people just look at me as an individual of Vanness Wu.)

Q：「もう昼食の時間だけど、お昼は食べないの？」
(It’s time for lunch. Don’t you eat?)
A：気を使ってくれてありがとう。このインタビューが終わったら食べますよ。ヴァネスさんのランチは？
(Thanks. I’ll have lunch after this interview. What about you?)
「（袋に詰まったカットフルーツをみせて）これだよ（笑）。日本でのスケジュールが終わったら、好きなものを食べるつもり。今は、仕事のために体を絞っているので」
(he showed me a bag of fruit in pieces) This. I’ll have my favourite food after my work in Japan. Now I have to keep my body in sharp because of work)
――仕事のために厳しいダイエットをしたり、アルバムのためにレコード会社の人と意見を戦わせたりと、ヴァネスさんの仕事からは、強い意志の力を感じます。
(From his strict diet and quarrel with the record company on the album’s production, I felt the strong resolution of Vanness toward his work.)
「うーん・・どうしても自分のやり方でやりたいと、我を通すほうではないと思います。でも今は自分のやり方に自信があるし、自分のやり方でやったほうが、ベストの方で自分を出せるとわかっているから。無理強いされても出来ないことは出来ないしね」
(Well…I don’t think I’m the one who wants to do in the way I wanted to at whatever cost. Yet, I’m confident in my way this time and I think I can exhibit the best of myself if I follow my way. Sometimes things are not under our control even when we strongly want it to.)

Q：個人の会社のことについても聞かせてください。映画などを製作するプロダクションを作りましたよね。PVもその会社で製作ですね。
(I would like to ask something about your own company. It is a production house for movies or so, right? Your PV is also made by it, right?)
A：「はい、それは「Smash and Grab」という会社で、友人と一緒に作りました。それから最近、僕個人の会社も作りました。まだそこで何をやるのかは決めてないんだけど。その会社は「Blood, Sweat and Tears」と言います。頭文字を取ると「BST＝ベスト」って読めるでしょ。これは英語のスラングで、血と汗と涙・・・つまり、何かを一所懸命やるという意味が込められています」
(Yes, that’s a company founded with friend and is called “Smash and Grab”. I also established a company by myself recently and I haven’t decided what to do there. That company is called “Blood, Sweat and Tears”. When taking the first alphabet of each of them, it is “BST= best”. It is an English slang which means doing our best in whatever thing that we do.)
Q：ネーミングがいかにもヴァネスさんらしい。今現在は、音楽の活動を楽しんでいますが、やりたいことがまだまだたくさんあるようですね。
(It’s very much “Vanness” from such a naming of the company. Now you’re concentrating on your music though, there seems to be a lot more other things that you want to do.)
A：「今年後半から、役者としての活動もどんどんやっていきたいと思っています。例えばそれがお金のかかった大作だろうと、ローバジェットの映画だろうと、いい脚本、いい役柄であれば、関係なくやってみたいですね。それから製作のほうにも興味があるので、よい機会があればぜひやってみたいと思っています。」
(From the later half of this year, I want to have more acting jobs. No matter if it’s a large production or a small one, as long as the script and the character is good, I want to try doing it. Also I’m interested in production as well if there is a good chance.)
＊音楽活動のほかにも、まだまだ多くの夢を持っているヴァネス、現在は、その夢に向かって一歩一歩、努力中。そして、確実に実現させている。そのことを本人もしっかり実感しているようだ、とにかく今は、全てのことが楽しくてしかたがない・・・そんな様子だった。
(Other than activities as a musician, Vanness still has lots of dreams to which he is working on step by step, and he is making his dreams coming true. He feels the same and now he very much enjoys the way that things are going.)
Q：最後にもう一度、コンサートのことについて聞きたいと思います。このコンサートに込められた想いについて教えてください。
(Lastly, I would like to ask you one more thing about the concert. What is the message in this concert?
A：「去年、最後のステージが終わって楽屋に戻ったとき、今までに味わったことのないような不思議な感動を覚えました。マネージャーと＜初めてのコンサートで、ついにここまでやったんだね＞と・・・二人で見詰め合った感動して、ちょっと涙が出ましたね。本当に大きな感動をもらったと思います。でも、この二度目のコンサートの話をいただいたとき、実は少し躊躇したんです。というのは、準備する時間が足りないのではと感じたからです。完璧なものを見せられないのなら断ろうとも思いました。だけど、３月のマレーシア・コンサートの時に考えが変わりました。僕、そのコンサートの時、脚を怪我したでしょう？その会場にもたくさんの日本のファンの方が来てくれていたのに、そのコンサートでは僕のベストを尽くせなかった。で、その日の夜、＜よし、ゼッタイ、日本でコンサートをして、ベストを尽くした姿をファンの人に見せよう！＞って、決心したんです。やはり、ファンの方には、自分の持てる限りのものを見せたいから。このコンサートでは、ベストを尽くして、最高のパフォーマンスを見せたいと思います

(Last year, when I went to the back stage after the concert, I felt the thrills that I had never felt before. Me and my manager look into the eyes and felt very touching and shed a bit tears that “we finally finished a good show for this first concert.” However, when it came to this second concert, I had a little doubt as I felt like not having enough time to prepare. If I cannot prepare perfectly for the show, I would rather reject the offer. Yet, I changed my mind in the March concert in Malaysia. My leg was injured during the concert and therefore I couldn’t perform to my best to those fans that came long away from Japan. At that evening, I promised to myself that, “I MUST hold a concert in Japan and show my best to the fans.” I want to show the best of myself to my fans.)
